Dr. Andrew Garner was Melinda May's ex-husband, professor of Psychology at Culver University, and a major antagonist in season 3. He and May were married for an undisclosed amount of time. However, it was long enough that he was still close to her mother. While working for Coulson to help newly-turned Inhumans, Dr. Garner opened Jiaying's diary, which was rigged with Terrigen crystals. He was then transformed into an Inhuman, and turned into Lash to kill Inhumans.
Early History Edit
In 2008, May went on a mission with Coulson to Bahrain to investigate a woman named Eva Belyakov that S.H.I.E.L.D. suspected of having super-strength and wanted to add her name to the Index. However, the mission didn't go as planned and a team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents were taken hostage. May single-handedly rescued the captured agents and killed Belyakov which earned her the name The Cavalry.
However, Belyakov's young daughter Katya was killed at the scene and May told Coulson and S.H.I.E.L.D. that Katya was killed in the crossfire. Andrew was the only person May told the truth to that she killed Katya as Katya was going to kill the hostages unless May killed her.
After her mission in Bahrain, May and Andrew became increasingly distant and they eventually divorced.
Season 2 Edit
In "One of Us," May asks Andrew to do a psychological evaluation of Skye as they just added her name to the Index. Andrews agrees on the conditions that his session with Skye be private and she get a copy of his report afterwards. During their session Andrew tells Skye she's afraid to face the truth that she has powers now.
At the end of the episode, Andrews tells May he recommends that Skye leave S.H.I.E.L.D. as being an agent is too much physical and emotional stress for her to handle. May asks Andrew if he'd consult for S.H.I.E.L.D. in the future, but he says no as S.H.I.E.L.D. hasn't changed and he has a reason for leaving, referring to his new girlfriend.
Season 3 Edit
After the war with Jiaying was over, Andrew and May went on vacation together to Maui as they wanted to know what their relationship would be like without S.H.I.E.L.D. However, after they got back from Maui Andrew disappeared and May assumed that that was his way of saying he didn't want to see her anymore.
However, the real reason Andrew disappeared was that he went through terrigenesis and transformed into Lash for the first time. He didn't want to tell May the truth because he knew she wouldn't understand he wanted to protect her from Lash.
In "Purpose in the Machine," Coulson has Andrew come to the base to do a psychological evaluation of a new inhuman named Joey. After his evaluation, however, Andrew ruled Joey to be psychologically unfit for duty and recommended three months of counseling and observation before reassessment.
In "Devils You Know," Andrew interviews Simmons about her experience on Maveth and Simmons confesses to Andrew that she gave up hope of ever returning to Earth. Later, Andrew tells Coulson he recommends Simmons be taken off active duty and he also argues with Coulson about not letting him interview Alisha before sending her on a mission.
May and Hunter go on a mission together to kill Ward, but when Hunter is exposed a gunfight ensues. Ward then shows them a live video of Andrew and warns them that unless they surrender he'll order Strucker to kill Andrew. May surrenders, but Hunter refuses to thus Ward gives the order to kill Andrew.
In "Among Us Hide...," S.H.I.E.L.D. rescues Andrew before Hydra can kill him, but he was injured in an explosion and they take him back to the base for his injuries. Andrew explains that the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Coulson sent to protect him saved his life and shot two Hydra agents before Strucker killed him and blew up the building. Andrew was able to escape, but wasn't able to completely escape the explosion which is how he got injured.
However, what really happened was, after the shooting started, Andrew turned into Lash and killed the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and the Hydra agents. Andrew then set the fire to destroy any evidence Lash was there.
In "Chaos Theory," Andrew interviews Joey at an inhuman training facility called the Cocoon, but during their interview Andrew can't stopping fantasizing about killing Joey as Lash. May interrupts their interview, however, tells Andrew she needs to talk to him alone and order the other agents to take Joey back to his room. May then explains to Andrew that she found Strucker and he told her how he saw him turn into Lash and kill those people. Andrew then shoots May with an ICER thus knocking her unconscious.
When May wakes up she finds herself handcuffed in an abandoned building and Andrew apologizes for having to knock her out. Andrew then begins to explain to May how he became Lash and tells her he still loves her. Also, Andrew tries to make May understand that what Lash does is necessary and all those people Lash killed deserved to die. Coulson then walks in the room and warns Andrew that the ATCU and S.H.I.E.L.D. are surrounding the building. Coulson tries to convince Andrew to surrender, but Lincoln then arrives which prompts Andrew to turn into Lash.
After fighting both the ATCU and S.H.I.E.L.D., May confronts Lash and calms him down which causes him to turn back into Andrew. May then shoots Andrew several times thereby forcing him into a containment module. Once in the module, Andrew immediately turns back into Lash, but is knocked unconscious by chemical gas that fills the module.
At the end of the episode, May agrees to let the ATCU take Andrew so they can keep him in stasis until a cure for terrigenesis can be found.
In "Maveth," after Simmons is taken prisoner by Hydra, she escapes and finds a tent housing all the inhumans the ATCU has imprisoned, including Andrew. When Simmons finds Andrew, she explains they didn't know the ATCU was Hydra; Andrew pleads with Simmons to let him out and mentions that Simmons knows he wouldn't hurt her. Simmons then notices two Hydra soldiers getting closer, lets Andrew out who transforms into Lash, and he immediately kills the two soldiers while Simmons escapes.
The Last Transformation Edit
In "Spacetime," Andrew surrenders himself to S.H.I.E.L.D. and explains that he feels Lash taking over and he knows that the next time he transforms he'll be Lash forever.
They put Andrew in the containment module and inject him with the terrigenesis vaccine Simmons has been working on hoping that it may stop Andrew from transforming. May visits Andrew and he explains that he realizes now that when last time they talked that was Lash talking to her not him. Furthermore, Andrew wants S.H.I.E.L.D. to keep Lash contained as he knows Lash will kill more people if he's free.
May then comments how all the terrible things in Andrew's life would've never had happened if she had never met him, but Andrew tells May she's also at the center of some of the best moments of his life.
Suddenly, Andrew feels himself about to transform and locks himself in the containment module. May watches as Andrew transforms into Lash for the last time.
Behind the scenes Edit
- Andrew's type of affiliation with S.H.I.E.L.D. is unknown but it appears he did contract work with them.
- His patients have included Coulson, Skye, and presumably May as well as many other SHIELD agents. It may have been how he and May met.
- Coulson was secretly a patient of Andrews as Dr. Garner was the only therapist Coulson trusted to talk about his alien writing compulsions.
- It seems that May still loves him, as she called him to say goodbye and mentioned things that she wished she had said. This is later proved when May was willing to sacrifice everything just to save his life in Devils You Know.
- Ward wanted to kill Andrew to get revenge on May as he blamed her for the death of Agent 33.
