Calvin Zabo, originally Calvin L. Johnson, is the father of Skye, and the widower of Jiaying, a surgeon to the underworld, among his other skills and trades. He was first seen (from the back) at the end of "Beginning of the End". He had an unparalleled knowledge of the Diviner, having been the one to inform Daniel Whitehall that this was its original name. In "What They Become" he is revealed to be Mister Hyde, hence his anger issues and superhuman capacities. Zabo's relationship with Jiaying led him to the edges of the Inhuman community.
Early History Edit
Calvin Johnson operated his medical practice in Milwaukee. He owned the building his practice was in and he mentioned to Skye he wasn't rich, but she would've grown up quite comfortably.
Cal was in China volunteering with Doctors Without Borders; he was only suppose to be in China for two weeks, but when he met Jiaying he fell in love and stayed in China to remain with her. Cal opened a clinic in China and Jiaying worked with him as a translator.
Daisy was born on July 2nd, 1988.
One day, a group of men came to Cal's clinic, calling themselves S.H.I.E.L.D. agents (really undercover Hydra agents), saying they were looking for Jiaying and they took her away. Cal left baby Daisy with people he trusted and tracked the men that took Jiaying to Austria. However, by time Cal found Jiaying, Dr. Whitehall had already drained her blood and removed several of her organs. Cal did what he could and "sewed her back up," but she was still on the verge of death.
Cal understood that Jiaying could heal herself by killing other people. He took her to a village in the Hunan province where Cal helped Jiaying kill every person in that village. With their deaths, Jiaying was able to heal herself and was back to full health.
Broken Family Edit
At some point, after the massacre of the village, Cal and Jiaying realized their daughter was missing.
Cal, later, learned a S.H.I.E.L.D. team was dispatched to investigate the massacre and they took Daisy back with them to America. One by one, Cal tracked down every agent that was a member of that team and tortured then killed them when they refused to tell him where Daisy was.
Cal and Jiaying began traveling the world, searching for Daisy, but after searching for some time Jiaying said she woke up one morning and realized what a horrible man Cal had become. At that point, Jiaying gave up the search for Daisy and accepted the fact that they would never see their daughter again. Furthermore, Jiaying blamed Cal for not being able to protect Daisy when S.H.I.E.L.D. took her.
At some point, Cal changed his last name to Zabo as he believed Calvin Zabo sounded more sinister. Also, he began working as an under-the-table doctor for criminals.
Mr. Hyde Edit
In "Beginning of the End", after Raina severs her relationship with Hydra and Garret, she goes to visit Cal. Cal's face isn't seen, but she informs him that she's found his daughter and hands him a picture of Skye to prove it. Cal picks up the picture with his hand soaked in blood.
In "Heavy is the Head", Raina steals the Obelisk from Creel and brings it back to Cal's clinic. Cal comments how Raina did well stealing the Obelisk and then orders her to touch it to see if she's really inhuman. Raina is relieved when the Obelisk doesn't kill her after she picks it up and Cal then promises to show Raina the Obelisk's true power after she brings him Skye.
Working with Whitehall Edit
In "A Hen in the Wolf House", Raina goes to Cal and begs him to give her back the Obelisk as if she doesn't have it then Whitehall will kill her. However, Cal refuses to give it to Raina as the Obelisk is the only that will "make her [Skye] understand me." Cal then suggests that Raina go beg Whitehall for mercy.
Later, Raina tells Coulson where Cal's clinic is in exchange for protection from Whitehall. Coulson, Skye, and the team go to the clinic where they find the bodies of two of Cal's latest victims. Cal watches them with his clinic's security cameras and he sees Coulson hugging Skye and Skye calling Cal a monster.
Cal then goes to Whitehall's office where he gives Whitehall the Obelisk, which Cal refers to as the Diviner. Cal then tells Whitehall he'll teach him how to survive the Diviner if he helps him kill Coulson as Cal is convinced Coulson stole Skye from him.
In "The Things We Bury", Whitehall meets with Cal and orders him to tell him everything he knows about the Diviner as none of their test have revealed much about it. First, Cal corrects Whitehall that the Diviner isn't a weapon like he thought, but it's more like a key. Furthermore, Cal talks about an alien city with a temple and if a "special person" who can touch the Diviner takes it inside the temple then something "cool" will happen. Whitehall then asks Cal if he'd take the power inside the temple for himself, but Cal says no as he only wants to kill the people that took his family away.
In "What They Become", Ward keeps the promise he made to Skye by reuniting her with her father; Ward kidnaps Skye and takes her to a Hydra base in Puerto Rico where Cal is. Cal apologizes as he didn't want them to meet like this and apologizes for not being there for her. Cal then explains how he needed Whitehall's help to find her and he brought her here so she can "receive her gift," that is go through terrigenesis.
A Hydra agent then comes in the room to tell them Whitehall needs to see them both. Cal then tells Skye that he's going to kill Whitehall as he has served his purpose.
At the meeting, Whitehall orders Skye to pick up the Diviner to see if she's inhuman.Skye picks up the Diviner and kills a Hydra soldier with it while Cal stabs another in the neck with his scalpel. However, Whitehall comments how he remembers now that Cal is Jiaying's husband and then Cal is knocked out by a Hydra soldier.
When Cal wakes up, he sees Skye tied to a chair and Whitehall standing over him. Cal tries to kill Whitehall, but Whitehall stops him with some kind of paralysis causing device. Whitehall then comments how he wants Cal to watch as he experiments on Skye, but Whitehall then becomes distracted by the sound of S.H.I.E.L.D. storming the building.
After Whitehall leaves, Cal overcomes his paralysis and kills the guard. Cal then leaves to kill Whitehall, but leaves Skye tied up as he doesn't want her to see what's he's about to do. Cal quickly finds Whitehall and Whitehall points a gun at him, but before he can shoot Cal Coulson shoots Whitehall in the back and kills him. Cal then screams at Coulson as he wanted to be the one to kill Whitehall and with him dead he can't take his revenge.
Cal then tackles Coulson and begins to beat him to death when Skye arrives and threatens to shoot Cal if he kills Coulson. Cal gets off Coulson and Skye orders him to leave; Cal agrees to leave, but tells Skye he'll be waiting for her as after she changes as S.H.I.E.L.D. will be afraid of her and he will always love her.
Reunion with Jiaying Edit
In "One of Us", after Raina informs Cal that Skye has gone through terrigenesis, Cal decides to show Skye what S.H.I.E.L.D. does to powered people like her. First, Cal recruits Wendell Levi to join his team and has him hack into the S.H.I.E.L.D. database and decrypt the Index. From it, Cal locates Karla, Francis, and Angar and convinces each of them to join his team of powered people.
Cal then leads his team to Manitowoc, Wisconsin, Coulson's hometown, where he has Angar use his power at a local high school thus knocking everyone at the school unconscious in order to lure in Coulson. After Coulson arrives, Cal threatens to have Angar scream into a microphone which would cause his voice to be broadcasted across the town unless he handed over Skye. May then arrives with a gun pressed against Skye's neck and threatens to kill her unless he lets his hostages go.
Suddenly, however, Gordon teleports in, grabs Cal, and teleports out. At the end of the episode, Cal is seen imprisoned at Afterlife and when Cal asks Gordon why he's being caged, Gordon says it's because he was making too much noise.
In "Afterlife", Gordon visits Cal in his cell and Cal asks why can't he see Skye. Gordon then explains how Cal's lack of self-control has put Afterlife at risk and he's lucky they haven't killed him yet. Later, Jiaying visits Cal to thank him for finding Skye, but still refuses to let him see her.
In "Melinda", Skye, Jiaying, and Cal have dinner together; Jiaying explains to Skye how Cal deserves this dinner with them as he kept the promise he made her and reunited their family. Cal wanted the dinner to be perfect so he brought a bottle of champagne and a bouquet of daisies.
In "The Frenemy of My Enemy", Jiaying tells Skye that Cal doesn't belong at Afterlife because he isn't inhuman which is why they're sending him home. Skye convinces Jiaying to let her go with Cal to Milwaukee so she can assure him that they'll see each other again and soften the blow when they tell him he can't come back to Afterlife.
After Gordon drops Skye and Cal off in the city, Cal decides to take this time to get to know Skye better and show her around Milwaukee. While they're walking, Cal describes the life he imagined their family having like where Skye would've gone to school and where they would've lived, but, after they get to Cal's old clinic, Skye tells Cal he needs to move on with his life and stop focusing on the life the could of had together.
Cal hears a somebody else in the building and learns Lincoln has been following them because Jiaying thought Cal might hurt Skye. Cal then realizes that he's being banished from Afterlife and starts fighting with Lincoln. Their fight is interrupted, however, when they realize a team of Hydra soldiers has stormed the building looking for Gordon. Cal and Lincoln hold off the soldiers to give Skye time to escape.
Gordon teleports in to rescue Skye, but at the last moment Cal tackles Gordon causing all three of them to be teleported together.
In "The Dirty Half Dozen", Cal confronts Jiaying about her trying to banish him from Afterlife, but Jiaying assures Cal they'll talk about it later and he storms off. Later, Jiaying tells Cal it was a mistake to send him away and tells him he can stay at Afterlife until things are less dangerous. Jiaying, also, asks Cal about Raina and he warns her that Raina is dangerous and that she should keep a close eye on her.
In "Scars", Jiaying informs Cal S.H.I.E.L.D. is coming to Afterlife and she asks him if they can be trusted. Cal tells her he doesn't like Phil Coulson, but Coulson does care about Skye. Jiaying then asks Cal about the Index and Cal warns her that she can't let any of her people be put on the Index. Cal then suggests that when S.H.I.E.L.D. arrives she hands him over to them as a show of goodwill as S.H.I.E.L.D. loves it when they get to lock someone up. When Gonzales arrives, Jiaying hands Cal over to his agents and Cal says goodbye to Skye.
In "S.O.S. Part 1", it's revealed that before S.H.I.E.L.D. took Cal, he injected himself with three vials of his formula. After Jiaying kills Gonzales, Coulson interrogates Cal back at the base about what Jiaying's plans are, but during the interrogation Cal suddenly collapses and Coulson takes him to the infirmary. After Simmons successfully revives him, Cal attacks them and it's revealed that Cal let S.H.I.E.L.D. take him only so he could get inside their base and kill as many S.H.I.E.L.D. agents as he could.
Coulson shoots Cal several times with an ICER, but it seems to have no effect. Cal begins ranting about how it's time for everyone in S.H.I.E.L.D. to die and chases after Coulson, Fitz, and Simmons. Coulson is able to stop Cal's rampage by slamming him against a wall with a S.H.I.E.L.D. SUV.
In "S.O.S. Part 2", while Cal is pinned to the wall, Coulson reminds Cal that Jiaying made him do all those horrible things and that she's the real monster. Cal then agrees to help Coulson rescue Skye from Jiaying.
It's revealed that Jiaying gave Cal to S.H.I.E.L.D. as she hoped Cal would distract Coulson long enough for her to take control of The Iliad.
Cal boards a S.H.E.L.D. jet with Coulson and they fly to The Iliad where Jiaying plans to release the terrigen mist in the ship's ventilation system and thereby kill every human onboard. Cal confronts Jiaying and tries to convince her to surrender, but Jiaying says she's doing this to protect Skye and Gordon then traps him behind a locked door.
Later, Cal escapes and finds Jiaying and Skye in a fight to the death. Cal then looks at Skye and says "You don't have to live with that pain. I will." Cal then kills Jiaying thus keeping the promise he made to protect their daughter.
Skye convinced Coulson to use the T.A.H.I.T.I. memory machine on Cal to erase all memories of his old life and give him a new identity.
At the end of "S.O.S. Part 2", it's shown Cal's new identity is Dr. Calvin Winslow and he operates his own veterinary clinic with no memories of Skye or Jiaying.
Cal would regularly inject himself with a special formula he created to make himself stronger. Cal believed if he had been stronger he could've protected Daisy.
- Super Strength: The drug Cal created gave him super-human strength as demonstrated by his rampage across the Playground where Coulson has to ram into him with an SUV to stop him.
Cal:(Talking about Whitehall) He thinks the Diviner is just a weapon, he has no idea of its true power, of what's inside. Oh, there's something inside.
Coulson: What are we talking about? Tesseract level power?
Cal: Sure. I don't know what that is.
Cal: But first, now that he's served his purpose, I'm gonna kill the man who destroyed my life. Best day ever.
Cal: What I want is to snap your spine like celery!
Coulson: See I don't think you really do.
Cal: Well let's test your hypothesis.
