- "It's not like this day can get any crazier, right?"
"Right...I take that back!"
- ―Lance Hunter and Joey Gutierrez
Early Life Edit
Little is known about Joey's past, other than he used to be a construction worker, dated a guy and likes to ride motorcycles.
One morning, Gutierrez took Nature Max Supplements Fish Oil pills and underwent Terrigenesis; when he emerged from his chrysalis, he had gained the power to melt metal objects. He ran the streets, since his bicycle had melted, begging for help. People feared him because he was causing explosions when he approached automobiles and almost caused a scaffold to crush two people.
Suddenly, the Advanced Threat Containment Unit arrived and attempted to apprehend him. When the operatives began shooting at him, Gutierrez hid in an alley. S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Daisy Johnson, Lance Hunter, and Alphonso Mackenzie arrived and extracted Gutierrez, transporting him to the Zephyr One.
In S.H.I.E.L.D. custody, Johnson explained to Gutierrez that he was exposed to Terrigen which activated his Inhuman powers. However, Joey couldn't believe Daisy's story and just wanted to go home. Mack explained to him why he couldn't go home by turning on the TV and showing him how every news station was talking about him and debating whether or not he was an alien or a terrorist.
Joey began panicking, accidentally melted Mack's metal clipboard, and forced Daisy to knock him out with a shock wave.
Joey was moved from S.H.I.E.L.D.'s base to a training facility for inhumans called The Cocoon. While training at The Cocoon, Joey gained greater control of his powers and was excited to become an agent of SHIELD and to use his powers for good. Dr. Garner comes to reevaluate Joey, but their interview is cut short by May orders that Joey go back to his room. Later, it's discovered Dr. Garner is Lash and was about to kill Joey.
Working with S.H.I.E.L.D.Edit
In the episode "Maveth", Mack, who is acting Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. while Coulson goes out to kill Ward, clears Joey and Lincoln for field duty to rescue Fitz, Simmons, Will, and Coulson from a fortified Hydra castle. When Joey asks what the plan is, whether it is to rescue Coulson, or the Inhumans Hydra was stockpiling, or whether they were destroying the fortified castle, or whether it was a combination of the three, Agent Lance Hunter explains to him, "This is how S.H.I.E.L.D. works. Make a plan, plan turns to rubbish, make a new plan. And to be crystal clear, this is the part where the plan turns to rubbish."
Later, Joey proved his worth when he saved Daisy's life. While Daisy was searching for Simmons, Giyera snuck up on her and fired at her with an assault rifle on burst fire mode. Joey ran in as he started shooting, and Joey threw himself between Daisy and the incoming bullets. Just before the bullets hit Joey, he melted them with his powers. This resulted in the bullets merely splattering on Joey's shirt, which did no harm to him. Lincoln then incapacitated the hostile Inhuman. Joey was thrilled to see that he survived, but he was even more thrilled when he realized the circumstances that rendered the bullets useless, excitedly exclaiming, "I'm bulletproof!"
In "Bouncing Back", Joey went with Daisy to Bogota, Columbia to investigate a new inhuman that stole a shipment of guns from a police transport. After Daisy captured Elena, Joey translated for her, as Elena only spoke Spanish, and she explained that she stole those guns because the local police are corrupt and she was going to destroy the guns to save lives. It was then Daisy received word that Hunter and Bobby had been captured by the corrupt police.
Joey was part of the rescue mission to save Hunter and Bobby. After finding the police station's armory, Joey melted all the guns and morphed them together into a ball thereby disarming the corrupt police. After Elena was paralyzed by Lucio, Joey melted the frames of Lucio's sunglasses to prevent him from using his power again. They then successfully rescued Bobby and Hunter.
In "The Team", Daisy contacts Joey explaining how Coulson and the others have been taken prisoner by Hydra and she's assembling the Secret Warriors (herself, Elena, Lincoln, and Joey) to rescue them. After boarding the jet, Daisy explains how the Hydra base is underground and their plan is to first parachute in and then get close to the base using the service wells. From there, Daisy will use her vibration powers to bust into the base.
After getting inside, the Warriors split up and Joey and Elena board an elevator. When they step off, they find a squad of Hydra agents ready to shoot them. Joey melts their bullets and Elena uses her super speed to tie them up.
The Warriors successfully rescue Coulson and the others and capture Malick, also. However, as they were boarding the plane, Lucio was waiting for them and he paralyzed Lincoln. Joey then morphed a metal pipe into a spear and stabbed Lucio with it thereby killing him. Joey then was traumatized over killing someone.
Back at the base Malick warns Coulson Hive has the power to brainwash inhumans and anyone of the Secret Warriors could already be working for him. Coulson then orders the base on lock-down and orders May and Mack to put Daisy and the others in quarantine until they can tell if any of them have been brainwashed.
Later, Coulson learns someone killed Malick and believes Lincoln is the killer after they find the Kree orb inside his backpack. However, it's revealed Daisy is the real mole and she framed Lincoln and killed Malick. Before Daisy leaves the base, she steals the orb and uses her powers to bust the hydraulics on the hangar doors so they couldn't follow her with the jet.
Powers and AbilitiesEdit
- Melting: Gutierrez can melt any metallic object from about three meters away or by touching it. The melting effect does not only affect the item he is touching, but also other items in a close range. His power tends to cause explosions when touching vehicles, as the fuel explodes due to the surrounding heat. He can also melt objects moving at high velocity, shown when he throws himself between Daisy and incoming bullets from an assault rifle, as he liquefied the bullets before he was hit, allowing him to survive.
- Metalmorphing: After training with SHIELD for some time, Joey was able to use his powers with enough precision to mold metal objects into different shapes. For example, he molded a metal filing cabinet into a round sphere, and fused guns into a modern art sculpture.
